These people really love plants and sharing their knowledge. They want to help you find a special plant and leave happy. They have so many beautiful and colorful varieties of succulents that I had never seen before. I agree that the place is sort of run-down and falling apart, but that makes for some great and unexpected discoveries! Prices are often not marked but everything is reasonable or a bargain. Just come and see for yourself what treasures await! I’ve loved their radio jingle since I was a kid, so I was happy to finally come see the place.
This greenhouse is delightfully-sketchy, and I say that with the utmost affection. As someone who’s been in many greenhouses, I find that those that are slightly disorganized, often have plants that aren’t your average big box store staples.
Being later in the season, the stock was lower, but there was still a nice selection of plants; outdoor, houseplants, and a huge selection of bonsai. There’s also a large selection of pots, trellises, and supplies. Prices were decent too.
Not only do I love walking around the garden center but their plants are Hardy as heck. I've bought several for my friends and family all of whom are really bad at taking care of the simplest of plants have yet to lose their babe. I can also attest, literally nothing I do to these plants outside of tearing them out of the soil has killed them. I'm talking straight up forgetting about them for weeks, leaving them out in direct sun and heat, overwatering, and just general neglect. Heck, I've got a ghost pepper plant that's still in the plastic container I bought it in five months ago and it's grown a thick trunk and is starting to bud. At this point I'm just seeing how far it'll go like this.
I should say though, please take care of your plants. I'm a horrendous example of quality botanical care
When I say I recommend these people, I mean I highly recommend them. I've had nothing but positive interactions with the people there and the quality of their product speaks for itself.
Traveled over an hour to meet Pete and the staff. Awesome experience. Got our first tree and love it. We will be back for sure. Thousands of bonsai to choose from.
I will try to be as nice as possible with this.
PLANTS + PRICE : 3/10
So to start off yes they do have a wide amount of plants but the prices change too often for the lack of care. One day something could be 5.95 and then the very next day it becomes 7.95 with no visible difference. On top of that 1/3-1/2 of the plants are overpriced. In addition, the plants themselves, take a VERY good look at them, most of them are infested with some aphid or harmful insect. I had bought a coleus plant and a lantana plant and when I got home BOTH had mealybugs. Thankfully I know how to get rid of these insects but they are extremely harmful to plants and can spread easily to others which would be bad for someone who may be adding that plant to a collection. I am in touch with someone who used to work there in the last 6 months and the person has said " they do spray 3/4 of their plants but it is extremely diluted and outdated. The store supplies aside from soil, mulch, fertilizers, and plants are also outdated".
ENVIRONMENT : 2/10
Unfortunately when I went the owner Pete seemed to be in a bad mood, I could hear him yelling at one of his outside workers. The other owner Rick was not in at that time. From the person I am in touch with they proclaim, " The place is not the best to work at. I was working 60 - 70 hours, I was not allowed any extra time or days off when I tried to ask I would get yelled at by the owner, so I just stopped asking. There is absolutely no where to cool off at sometimes being outside is cooler granted I get it is a greenhouse but there should be one area where it is cooled especially working 10+ hours 6-7 days a week with no overtime pay or anything. The owner would complain about his working crew, yell, and put them down most of the time. Rick was much better and I preferred to go through him than Pete. There is no price system, nothing is really tagged for prices plant wise. If it was a slow day it was the workers fault for why Pete was not making money. He would also say he is giving you a raise, and when you ask about it say either he never said that, has no clue what you are talking about, says you don't deserve it, or just walk off." So from this persons perspective I would say to BE CAREFUL if you want to work here.
Personally, I would rather go to other greenhouses than this one, the workers seem lovely but the owner not so much. There are tons of other greenhouses that are around the same if not lower prices! Meadow View Growers, Stockslagers Greenhouse and Garden Center, Gardening Haven, Berns Garden Center, and Knollwood Garden Center have 3/4 - all the plants this greenhouse has that are in MUCH better condition. I prefer the first two, the staff is friendly, plants are better cared for, and decently priced. Supplies there are also not outdated.
Thank you.
They have an amazing selection of everything tree's, bushes, fruit tree's, berry bushes, flowers, of all kinds wide varieties of house plants, pond liners, different kinds of slate rocks, soils, plant foods, even some house hold items! The best part of it is that the staff are great knowledgeable, helpful, kind and will go above and beyond.. I want to say thank you to everyone at the North Dayton Garden Center & Nursery!
Purchased this beautiful bonsai tree today! I hadn’t been here in years, but I remembered that they had a huge selection of bonsai trees. I was not disappointed! Picking one out was a little intimidating, but they were happy to help me pick something in my budget and set me up for success! They provided great service and took the time to explain the different choices and educate me on how to care for my new bonsai. This place really is a gem and I was happy to support a local business!
Great prices on bonsai and a wild selection. Helpful owner and staff
